The Winter Trends You Need to Know About in 2021

Comfort dressing, but make it chic

It’s safe to say that last winter was a sartorial write off. With nowhere to go and nobody to see, most of the population swiftly transitioned from office-ready attire to sweatpants within weeks.

Now, fashion is back in a big way. The autumn/winter 2021 season is best summed up as elevated comfort. While matching tracksuits are no longer the only outfit of choice, they still play their part in a curated winter wardrobe that marries chunky knits with plush quilting, smart jeans and yes, trackpants.

The trick is to pair loungewear with oversized silhouettes and an assortment of textures. Rest assured that comfort is still key; however, blurring the lines between work and play attire will help you move from the couch to café with ease.

Here, the new season styling choices that will place you at the forefront of the fashion pack:

Oversized outerwear

Nothing says ‘winter’ quite like a puffer jacket. A trend from 2020 that is set to carry over into the new season, puffer jackets are a simple and accessible way of styling up any outfit.

Our suggestion? The more volume the better. Influencers, fashion editors and celebrities alike are opting for oversized outerwear in neutral hues; it’s the oh-so stylish winter warmer that you can wear with literally anything.

As always, environmental impact and carbon footprint is front of mind for the conscious consumer. As part of Kmart’s commitment to sustainability through their Better Together program, this season, the filling for the retailer’s longline puffer jackets contain 100 per cent recycled polyester made from reclaimed materials.

Tone on tone

Tonal dressing is back in a big way. Simply grab a few key pieces in the same colour way and don them all from head to toe. Two piece sets are the obvious choice – but why don’t you try layering it up with textures, patterns and solid shades in the same tone? Pick a hue, any will do!

Fresh denim

Some high-rotation pieces remain classics for a reason. Case in point: denim. Update the hardest working section of your closet with a do-it-all pair of straight leg jeans. The season’s most in-demand cut, this flattering silhouette is suitable for every occasion: dress up with heels and a silk blouse or dress down with sneakers and a casual pullover. The options are endless.

Textured knits

There is nothing more ‘hygge’ than luxuriating at home in soft and cozy knits. Keep it simple with basic crew necks, v-neck and turtleneck designs or experiment with cropped cardigans and boucle.

Our advice? Take note of the garment’s composition before handing over your credit card details. Kmart’s autumn/winter 2021 collection contains knitwear composed of fabrications incorporating merino, recycled and wool fibres. This year, the retailer has also introduced viscose fibres made using wood pulp sourced from responsibly managed forests and converted into fibres using less energy and water compared to conventional methods.
