While Based On A True Story isn’t actually based on a true story, it does follow a married couple (played by Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina) who, after encountering a notorious serial killer, enlist his expertise to create their own true crime podcast.

What is the plot of Based On A True Story?
Ava (Cuoco) and Nathan (Messina) are a married couple with a baby on the way, who are struggling to make ends meet.
However, their relatively normal lives are thrown into disarray when they hire who they think is plumber, Matt (Tom Bateman).
As it turns out, Matt is actually the Westside Ripper, Los Angeles’ most notorious (and fictional) murderer, the Westside Ripper. Whoops.
Instead of turning him into the police, however, Ava and Nathan present Matt with a proposition
Ava, a true crime fanatic, knows just how lucrative podcasts of this genre can be. So, to solve their financial woes, the couple use Matt’s dark secret to create their own podcast: The Westside Ripper.
Inevitably, chaos follows, as Ava and Nathan attempt to hide their new business venture from those closest to them, while also trying to prevent the Westside Ripper from committing further murders – which, as it turns out, is a big task.
Who is in the cast of Based On A True Story?
The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco plays Ava, and Chris Messina plays her husband, Nathan, a former tennis player turned coach.
Other cast members include Death on the Nile‘s Tom Bateman as Matt (aka the Westside Ripper), Scream VI actress Liana Liberato, Succession’s Annabelle Dexter-Jones, and Stranger Things’ Natalia Dwyer.
Spoiler alert though – not all of the characters played by this star-studded cast make it to the end of the season.
Will There Be A Season 2 Of Based On A True Story?
At this stage, there’s no news as to whether Based On A True Story will be renewed for a second season.
However, given that season one only aired in June 2023, we’re unlikely to see season two hit our screens any time soon.
