Elton John and Paul Rudnick are developing a new Broadway musical based on The Devil Wears Prada, taking inspiration from both Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel and the 2006 film starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.
John will compose the music, while Rudnick will write the book and lyrics.
“Re-imagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theatre is super exciting,” John says in a release. “I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film, and a huge aficionado of the fashion world. I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.”
Producers Kevin McCollum and Fox Stage Productions’ Bob Cohen said in a joint statement: “To bring The Devil Wears Prada to the stage, we knew we needed to find artists as inimitable as the characters in the story. We needed artists whose work has run the gamut from music and publishing to drama and fashion. We could only think of two names: Elton John and Paul Rudnick.”
There are memorable movies and then there are those movies so referencable they stand the test of time by the sheer force of their quotability alone.
The Devil Wears Prada, released a decade ago (seriously, we know), is one of those movies. Whether it’s the chilling one-liners muttered by Runway editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestley (Meryl Streep), or the insulting quips spat by first assistant Emily (Emily Blunt), the film’s best lines sit high in our most commonly used quote arsenal with those from the likes of Mean Girls and Zoolander.
Bring on the Broadway production!
