The 30-year-old Orange Is The New Black actress spoke to The Edit in an interview on the topic.

“All I wanted was a boy’s name growing up – Charlie, Billie, Max, Frankie.” she said. “You just know my mum wanted a girly girl princess!”

She said that she had always felt different growing up, and noticed that she felt more comfortable around boys than girls.

“Everyone had Barbies; I had ninja turtles and Superman… I was crazy about Archie comics. I played footie with the boys.”

She went through a period where she felt that she had been born into the wrong body, and cut her hair off and bound her chest. She looked up to androgynous figures like David Bowie and Annie Lennox, and made a short film about gender-fluidity and her transformation, called Break Free.

But now she has come to terms with being a woman, and is happy she didn’t opt for surgery.
