One thing all Australians were reminded during the same-sex marriage debate is that love always wins.
Love had another spectacular victory in federal parliament today, with Liberal MP Tim Wilson proposing to his long-term partner while discussing the marriage equality bill.
At the end of his speech in the House of Representatives, Mr Wilson turned to his partner of nine years Ryan Bolger.
“In my first speech, I defined our bond by the ring that sits on both of our left hands, and that they are the answer to questions we cannot ask,” the emotional MP said, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
“So there’s only one thing left to do. Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me.”
Mr Bolger, who was sitting in the gallery, responded with a resounding yes and cheers erupted in parliament.
The same-sex legislation was introduced in the House of Representatives on Friday morning and is expected to pass after a discussion of proposed amendments, the ABC reports.
