Ivanka Trump has been close by the side of her father, Donald Trump, in his presidential campaign. However she’s recently played an even greater part by being front and centre of his new ad campaign, called ‘Motherhood’.
She has caused controversy with the opening line, which has immediately alienated many women.

“The most important job any woman can have is being a mother.”
Uhhh, ok Ivanka. But what about women who don’t have children, don’t want children, or can’t have children? Several angry tweeters have already brought these issues to light…
In the ad, Ivanka goes on to talk about how Trump’s plan for paid maternal leave, tax cuts for childcare and dependent care savings accounts will help ‘American families’, however once you look closer, his policies tell a different story.
As CAP Action points out, there are gaping holes in his plans, one being that the policies focus solely on mothers and don’t offer options for fathers, which would be problematic in male same-sex marriage families with children.
Donald Trump has been dismissive of a man’s role in the family in the past, with Buzzfeed unearthing interviews in which he commented that men who looked after children were ‘acting like wives’. One particular interview with Howard Stern in 2005 reveals a very traditional view on the role of men and women in families.
“I mean, I won’t do anything to take care of them. I’ll supply funds and she’ll take care of the kids. It’s not like I’m gonna be walking the kids down Central Park,” Trump said. He added to Stern two years later, “Melania is a wonderful mother. She takes care of the baby and I pay all of the costs.”
