Police quickly reacted to the scene, shooting and killing the man responsible.

Het Laatste Nieuws, a local tabloid, reports witnesses saying a man shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great”) in Arabic before the small blast.

The suspect was wearing a rucksack packed with explosives at Belgium’s busiest railway station, the publication states, with soldiers shooting the man “several times” as he appeared to trigger a device.

Police say the situation is now under control with no other casualties or injuries reported.

“He cried ‘Allahu Akbar’ and he blew up a trolley,” Nicolas Van Herrewegen, a railway sorting agent, was quoted by AFP news agency as saying, reports BBC.

“I was behind a wall when it exploded. I went down and alerted my colleagues to evacuate everyone. He [the suspect] was still around but after that we didn’t see him.”

“It wasn’t exactly a big explosion but the impact was pretty big,” he added. “People were running away.”

Brussels has been on high alert since a terrorist attack on March 22nd 2016, which killed 33 and left 300 others injured.
