Texas has just made a major move to advance two anti-abortion bills, passing both through the Senate.
The Texas Tribune reports that one bill, Senator Brandon Creighton’s Bill 25, would allow doctors to lie to mothers about their unborn child suffering from a disability. This would discourage mothers from getting abortions and thus decrease the likelihood of the doctor getting sued.
This bill easily passed through the Texas Senate, 21-9.
“We’re talking about promoting an environment where the best physicians in America will want to practice medicine in Texas,” Creighton said about the bill.

The next bill, Senator Charles Perry’s Bill 415 bans dilation and evacuation abortions from occurring in the second trimester of a pregnancy if the fetus is alive. This procedure is typically used to get rid of any tissue remaining in the uterus from a miscarriage, or an abortion where a fetus has severe abnormalities or defects. It takes place in the second trimester because these abnormalities can only be detected from as early as 18 – 23 weeks.
Supporters suggested that this was a ‘barbaric’ practice, calling the procedure ‘dismemberment abortions’. Supporters claimed that by passing this bill, the government would remove the only safe procedure for aborting at this stage of pregnancy.
The bill also passed 21-9.

Both bills have now gone to the Texas House, and will have to be passed there before they come into effect.
Women were so outraged that these bills had even been proposed that about a dozen women protested in costumes from The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel where women are forced to give birth against their will.
