Those awkward exchanges between presenters at awards nights are always cringe-worthy – in an overly scripted, poorly acted, rarely funny kind of way – but Allison Williams’ turn at the 2017 MTV Movie Awards will go down as being in particularly poor taste.
The Girls star was on stage to present the award for Best Kiss with her Get Out co-star Lil Rey Howery, and it’s already drawn the internet’s ire. Note to Allison (and whoever wrote her shocking script): racist jokes, especially poorly executed ones, don’t tend to go down well on live TV.
It all started because Williams plays racist Rose Armitage on Get Out, which garnered her a nomination for Best Villain at the awards. She asks Rey what she can do to win back people’s respect after playing such a role, before offering up her own suggestions.
Unfortunately, the ideas she comes up with do little other than to perpetuate racist stereotypes. Such as making it “illegal to ask, ‘can I touch your hair?’” and saying George Washington’s face should be replaced with Denzel Washington’s. Or putting Beyonce’s Lemonade on Spotify.
Cue Twitter tirades as viewers expressed their disbelief that such a skit got approved:
