Is it just us or did the mercury suddenly drop this week? Like it or not, the time has come to pack away our summer wardrobe (see you in September, linens!) and pull our winter warmers out of storage.
While a good portion of last year’s winter basics will carry over into 2021, now is the perfect time to top up your wardrobe with new season designs. Kmart’s Autumn/Winter collection contains a range of elevated yet timeless pieces that can be dressed up or down, and styled seamlessly with existing favourites. For women, recycled yarns, heritage cable kits and touches of merino in a soft colour palette of blues, grey and dusty pink are set to be popular.
In the video above, marie claire market editor Ella Blinco Jury breaks down the key trends to know this winter, all available from Kmart.
1. Loungewear
Good news – last year’s loungewear trend is only gaining momentum. This winter, we plan to socialise a lot more than we did in 2020 and according to Blinco Jury, you can wear your tracksuit out of the house. “Chuck a beautiful trench coat over the top, add some boots and some great gold jewellery.”
2. Tonal dressing
One of the easiest ways to style up an otherwise casual outfit, the key to tonal dressing is to opt for neutrals or soft muted colours. “It’s just about finding those tonal colours and accessorising accordingly.”
3. Layering
“Layering for winter is about finding pieces that work together cohesively and look great, but also keep you warm,” says Blinco Jury. “Start with the basics, such as a singlet, t-shirt or turtleneck, and build on that. Next you can move onto shirts, where you can add a print or a pop of colour. Finish your layered look off with a blazer or a fab coat for extra warmth.”
4. Texture
When it comes to outerwear, tactile textures are set to be popular this year. “We’ve seen a lot of texture in the recent shows. Faux fur will definitely be having a moment for the new season, along with shearling and teddy coats.”
5. Knitwear
Both pretty and practical, knitwear is a non-negotiable in any winter wardrobe. “Knits are so easy to wear and style into any outfit. Wear a knit over a dress or a silky skirt and team with chunky boots, or keep it classic and pair with jeans and throw on a coat over the top.” Blinco Jury’s pick? “I’ll be looking for oversized chunky knitwear in neutral colours.”
